This time I will write about a topic that has attracted a lot of attention in my career and that very little is said about monocultures and biodiversity.
Because 80% of all the cultivated hectares are monocultures that are defined as a system of agricultural production of great extension, in which the planting of only one type of crop is carried out. Similar genetic characteristics, all the methods used in this crop are identical, irrigation, fertilizer, light, harvest time, among others. These are very delicate compared to when promoting biodiversity within crops, avoiding or reducing: weed infestations, insect invasions, disease epidemics and the effect of climate change on the production of raw materials. In addition to this, biodiversity promotes efficiency in the use of resources, productivity, optimizing biomass harvests, promoting pollination and soil health. Finally, monocultures are associated with high levels of production, and the little importance that the environment has in their process, in addition to increasing the use of pesticides that are harmful to species that keep pests away, increasing soil contamination and increasing the damage it can cause to human health.
The monoculture system in my opinion is not the best option, but even so it is the most used due to the great profits that it brings, there should be some regulatory law for these, well that is just my humble opinion.
Checked.
